Our Initiatives with Seedballs

One of the most effective and sustainable methods for afforestation is the use of seed balls. This ancient Japanese technique was introduced and popularized by the renowned scientist and natural farming pioneer, Masanobu Fukuoka. This method involves collecting native seeds and coating them with a mixture of clay, nutrient-rich soil, and organic manure, then shaping them into small, compact balls. Once dried, these organic seed balls are scattered across designated areas where greenery needs to be restored, remaining protected until the monsoon arrives and conditions are right for natural germination.

Seed balls are an economical, eco-friendly, and scalable solution for restoring green cover, particularly in rural and semi-arid regions of Maharashtra and across India. They require minimal intervention and are especially effective in areas where conventional plantation methods are difficult to implement.

Seed Bank: Preserving Nature’s Treasure

A seed bank is a dedicated place where a wide variety of native seeds are carefully collected, cleaned, sorted, and preserved for future afforestation efforts. At Karvaan Foundation, we encourage students, volunteers, and local communities in Udgir and surrounding regions to collect seeds from native trees rather than discarding them. These stored seeds serve as the raw material for making seed balls, ensuring that regionally appropriate plant species are used for ecological restoration. By promoting native species, we actively support biodiversity and improve the chances of successful long-term reforestation.

In Udgir, our workshops in government and private schools and colleges give students a direct, practical experience with nature and rural education in environmental conservation. Participants learn how to prepare seed balls from scratch, understand the science behind the technique, and discover the importance of native biodiversity and its role in combating climate change. They also learn when, where, and how to disperse seed balls responsibly for the best germination results.

Corporate Offices and Communities

Our workshops have also been held in corporate offices, residential communities, universities, and public awareness events across India, combining learning with a fun, hands-on experience that encourages teamwork and creates a positive environmental impact.
